It is the work of shaping stone for many different purposes. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It is a craft with a very rich history, as people have always had access to natural stone. They made their first tools from it, and later used it in building, architecture, sculpture (art) and landscaping.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The stonemason and the stone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A stonemason's work calls for a special understanding of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/marnit.si\/en\/vrste-naravnega-kamna\/\">natural stone<\/a><\/strong>. It is hard and durable, but also very sensitive, so knowing the different types of stone matters all the more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A stonemason works stone by hand and by machine. Using many different tools, the stonemason first roughs out the natural stone to give it its basic shape, then moves on to the fine work: carving ornaments and other details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A stonemason works with different types of stone, so it is especially important to know the properties of each one. Besides working the stone, stonemasonry also includes fitting the products and transporting them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/marnit.si\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/kamnosek-obdeluje-naravni-kamen.jpg\" alt=\"Kamnosek obdeluje naravni kamen\" class=\"wp-image-17848\" title=\"A stonemason working natural stone\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A stonemason uses sharp tools, so the work calls for great care and precision. It is also important to wear protective equipment, as the nature of the work means constant exposure to hazards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyone who works as a stonemason needs to be physically fit, as it is a hard and demanding job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On top of all this, it takes a great deal of patience, as some projects last months or even years. But this is also what tells us that the finished pieces are one of a kind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A stonemason works with both natural and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/marnit.si\/en\/dekorativni-kamen\/\">decorative stone<\/a><\/strong>, making stairs, railings, window sills, fireplaces, memorials, wall and floor coverings and other stone products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A stonemason needs to be patient, persistent and precise, and also needs an eye for beauty and a feel for art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stonemasonry today<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stonemasonry still plays an important part in preserving cultural heritage today. Its main aim is to create products that are both attractive and practical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, stonemasonry is moving more and more towards sustainable practice.
