Sandstone: a natural stone that adds to the look of any home

Sandstone blends well with the natural surroundings, and it is also very strong, long-lasting and resistant to different weather conditions. In this post we look at its properties, how it forms and where you can use the wide range of sandstone patterns.

Properties of sandstone

Sandstone is a rock made of fine grains of sand, held together by a carbonate, quartz, clay or iron binder. It forms when sand settles in layers in water (for example in river bends, lakes or oceans) or in air (for example in deserts). Under pressure, the settled layers harden and bond with minerals that fill the pores between the grains. Because of the way it forms, sandstone is classed as a sedimentary rock, more precisely a cemented sediment.

Sandstone is a very resistant rock that copes with all kinds of weather, so it is especially suitable for outdoor use. It is a common choice for building and paving, because it is easy to work. Sandstone is porous: layers of sandstone hold large amounts of water, so they are often aquifers.

Types of sandstone

Because of the way it forms, the surface of sandstone is often layered and contains fossils. Its mineral composition shows which rocks the sandstone came from. There are several types of sandstone, which differ in colour and hardness. The variety of patterns depends on the grain size, how far the iron has oxidised and the amount of organic matter. It is most often found in brown, yellow, red, grey, pink, white and black shades.

At Marnit there is a wide range of sandstone patterns to choose from, and you are sure to find the right one for your home.

Sandstone is not too demanding to look after, but it is more sensitive than, for example, granite or limestone. For regular cleaning, a brush and warm water are enough. Remove stubborn stains with special cleaners made for this stone.
