Headstones made to last for ever
Headstones made of natural stone are the most common choice. They are a memorial and a sign of respect for our closest and dearest who have passed away. Made of natural stone, they stand for permanence, like the memory of the people they are made for.
Nobody looks forward to buying a headstone. At the same time, we know that one day we will all need one, and whoever it is for, it matters a great deal to everyone who will remember the person who has died.
At Marnit we want our headstones to tell the stories of our loved ones who have passed away. That is why we work hard to reach the highest possible standard and to make sure the headstone we deliver and fit lasts for ever.
Why choose a natural stone headstone?
Because a headstone is exposed to many kinds of weather, it must be made of a material that is above all resistant and hard-wearing. One such material is natural stone and, because it lasts almost for ever, it is very well suited to this purpose.
In addition, our company makes each headstone entirely to the customer's wishes, which means every one is a one-off.
Which stone should you choose for a headstone?
When choosing a headstone, most people first think about which type of stone suits it best. Keep in mind that natural stone headstones stand outdoors, so they face very varied conditions: snow, rain, sun, changes in temperature and settling ground. That is why it matters so much which natural stone you choose.
The most common material for making headstones is still granite, but that does not mean it is the only suitable one. Instead of granite, many people also choose marble, limestone or sandstone. You need to touch a stone and get a feel for it before you decide.

It helps to know the main properties and advantages of each stone, because that makes it much easier to decide which stone to use for a headstone.
Why use granite for a headstone?
Granite lasts for ever and is one of the most versatile natural stones. It is exceptionally tough and of high quality, and there is plenty of granite in stock, so it is always available.
It also suits headstones because it is very easy to maintain and clean, and it resists dirt, knocks and heat.
It is true that granite is much harder to cut than marble, for example, but this also means that outside factors will not easily damage it. Granite also comes in every shade of grey – from almost white to almost black.
Limestone, a very popular choice for headstones
Admittedly, limestone is a slightly more delicate stone than granite, but sealing gives it extra protection, so it can also be used outdoors.
The main advantage of limestone is that it comes in many natural colours, mostly beige shades. It has a clean look, which makes it feel modern and contemporary, and its price is fairly affordable, which is an important quality of this natural stone.
Marble, the stone of the finest works of art
Marble is known as a very durable and strong stone. It costs a little more, but it looks soft and is pleasing to the eye. Another advantage of marble is that it is a slightly softer stone, so it is easier to shape and can be made into beautiful headstones.
Sandstone, one of the most affordable types of stone
Besides its low price, sandstone also offers strength and resistance to the weather. Sandstone It is very durable, which is a key quality for a headstone.
Cleaning and caring for headstones
Because headstones made of natural stone are exposed to many kinds of weather, it is important to maintain and clean them regularly. Otherwise they can get damaged. It is a good idea to clean them at least three times a year by removing mud, bird droppings and other dirt.
You can clean headstones with just warm water and a natural-bristle brush. For marble, wiping it with a damp cloth is enough. Never use harsh cleaners, or home-made ones with vinegar, because they damage natural stone. If algae grow on a headstone, there is a special cleaner on the market that removes them effectively.
We also advise you to apply a sealant to the headstone every five years. It stops dirt from getting into the structure of the stone. This gives it more protection, makes cleaning easier and keeps the stone looking good for longer.
Natural stone headstones made to measure
At Marnit we do not mass-produce headstones. Each one is made to the customer's order. We always do our very best to meet the customer's wishes and to make sure that headstone reflects the memory of the person who has died.
You have a wide choice of colours. Customers usually choose darker shades such as grey and black, but lighter shades such as light grey, white and brownish are not far behind.
You can choose from a wide range of shapes, from classic rounded to modern rectangular, oval or other irregular shapes, and on request we can include special motifs. So headstones can follow a standard design or be designed entirely for you.
Our work does not end with making the headstone. We also repair graves, clean memorial plaques and make inscriptions for them, and we can engrave various symbols of life and death. If you would like a stone flower vase in front of the headstone, we will be glad to make that too.
At Marnit we know how important a headstone is, so we will give you expert advice and guide you through the whole ordering process. First we draw the headstone based on your wishes for shape and colour, then we make it with care and finally fit it in its place.
We have already restored hundreds of headstones. This long tradition, together with all our knowledge and experience, is what gives our products the finishing touch and makes them last for ever.
