Natural stone steps

When we furnish our homes, we often focus on the look and choose furniture for its appearance … and we often forget about the stairs or staircase. Staircase is certainly one of the most important structural elements of a building, because if it is made properly, it blends well with the rest of the living space. There are three types of staircase, which differ in shape: spiral, straight and folding. Several factors affect which one you choose, including the space and the height you have. As we said, the staircase is one of the most important parts of a building, so it must be made of a high-quality, strong and long-lasting material. Natural stones such as marble, granite, limestone and sandstone are a good choice for exactly these reasons. A material like this gives you not only good looks but also practicality.

Why choose natural stone stairs?

Natural stone makes a staircase distinctive, exclusive and elegant. It also gives the room the staircase is in a sense of harmony and refinement. Besides the look, natural stone stairs are a good choice because they are easy to clean and look after. They last a long time, because every tread and every riser is made from a single piece, with no joints. For stone stairs we most often use granite, marble, limestone and sandstone… These stones, or natural materials, resist all kinds of loads and weather, are not sensitive to changes in temperature and are easy to look after … For extra protection against water and dirt, all they need is sealing, which brings out the structure of the stone even more. These materials are suitable for indoor and outdoor surfaces.

How we make stone stairs

If you decide to have stone stairs made and fitted, we first invite you to our showroom, where you can choose the most suitable stone for your building with our expert help. Then we meet at your building, where we take measurements and advise you on the details, so that you are as happy as possible with the finished stairs. As every staircase is one of a kind, we approach every project that way too. There is a wide range of colours and patterns, so we are happy to advise you: if the staircase gets little daylight, we suggest lighter shades. We also show you the different finishes for stone stairs: you can choose polished, brushed, flamed or sandblasted. On request, we shape the edges of the stair elements in different profiles and make sure there is no risk of slipping or injury.

Outdoor and indoor stairs

Outdoor stairs are usually not polished. They are finished so that they are not slippery even in the rain (flamed or brushed surface). This keeps them safe to walk on in any weather. It is the other way round with indoor stairs, where customers most often choose a polished finish.

A tip for using the space under, between and above your stairs!

There is usually quite a bit of free space under, between and above the stairs, and it is wise to make good use of it, especially if space is tight. Under the stairs, people most often choose cupboards, storage and the like, or create a place to relax. Between the stairs and the walls, you can use shelves to create a “library”.   Natural stone stairs win over even the most demanding customer. For more information, contact us at info@marnit.si
