7 things you should know about marble (number 5 will surprise you)

Natural stone is most often used in the final stages of building or when fitting out a space, whether a home or business premises. Because the range is so wide, from marble, granite, limestone and travertine to sandstone and more, it is often hard to decide which one is right for us. In this series of tips we have prepared for you, we start by looking more closely at marble, which is one of the most popular.

The word comes from Greek

The word marble comes from ancient Greece. “Marmaron” or “marmaros” was, and still is, the Greek word for a shining or crystalline stone. The English use the word “marble”, meaning “shines like”, which they borrowed from the French, who call marble “marbre”. Our southern neighbours chose the words mermer and mramor. Very different cultures, but very similar names. All of them describe a natural stone with a sparkling structure, seen as a symbol of timeless refinement and luxury.

It is a metamorphic rock

Marble is limestone that formed through metamorphism deep inside the Earth. High pressure and temperature gave it its remarkable lustre and a distinctive range of colours. Experts even say marble comes from the oldest parts of the Earth's crust, which is very likely why it is so resistant and durable in all weather conditions. It starts life as limestone or dolomite, then pressure and heat turn it into a harder, denser and more colourful stone. Small crystals hidden in its structure are the main reason it comes in different colours. And these colours are what make this natural stone so popular around the world, as it can be matched to any design and material.

A symbol of luxury and quality

Marble increases the value of the room or property it is in. It combines beauty, a natural look, durability and timelessness. Best of all, marble is also one of a kind, as no two pieces are the same, which adds further to its value.

Versatile

Marble is used to cover walls and floors, as well as stairs indoors and outdoors. Marble-clad columns inside your home bring a sense of exclusivity and add to the quality of the whole room. It has traditionally been used for flooring, as processing allows slabs in very different shapes, from tiles of all sizes to mosaics. However, marble is not a suitable choice for a kitchen worktop.

No two slabs in the world are the same

It may seem impossible, but it is true. No two marble slabs in the world are the same. That is why this stone is so distinctive and valued. It also means you should take care to order slabs from the same or a similar batch.

Higher price

Marble is in a higher price range, but you get high quality and, above all, durability. It will serve not only you but the generations after you too. Marble also comes at many different price points.

It is easy to maintain

Marble surfaces are very easy to care for. All you need is water or another gentle cleaner and a soft cloth. After cleaning, wipe the surface with a dry cloth. Where strongly coloured liquids may be spilt (juice, red wine, coffee …), we recommend sealing it beforehand.
