Quartzite: a hard, durable natural stone with an elegant look

Have you heard of quartzite? It is a very hard natural stone. Thanks to its distinctive beauty, fine structure, durability and easy care, it is becoming more and more popular in design.

Properties and formation of quartzite

Quartzite is a metamorphic rock made almost entirely of the mineral quartz. Quartzite starts its geological life as grains of sand on a beach, a desert dune or a riverbed. The sand grains are compressed and bonded together, and this forms sandstone. Sandstone turns into hard, durable quartzite under high pressure and temperature. These conditions are created by tectonic compression in orogenic belts.

You may wonder why quartzite is so popular with architects and designers today. The answer is simple. It is a hard, timeless, durable and versatile stone. Quartzite is one of the hardest and most hard-wearing stones found in nature. It is very weather resistant, which is why it often forms ridges and the peaks of mountains and hills.

Types of quartzite

Quartzite is usually white or grey, because quartz sand is also light in colour. Other minerals carried by groundwater can create shades of green, blue or iron red. Marnit offers a wide choice of quartzite patterns that will add life to the architecture of a building.

Care and maintenance of quartzite

One of the main advantages of quartzite is that it is easy to look after. Together with its long life, this makes it a convincing choice. Cleaning and caring for quartzite is simple. A microfibre cloth and warm water are enough, and a cleaner made for the purpose is even better. The only thing to keep in mind – if something is spilled, clean the surface as soon as possible so it does not soak in.

Where can you use quartzite?

As it is very hard-wearing, hard and easy to look after, quartzite is suitable for outdoor and indoor use and for making many kinds of products. In prehistoric times it was used to make stone tools, and today it is an essential part of innovative architecture.

Flooring or wall cladding outdoors, in the hallway, in the bathroom or around the fireplace, kitchen worktops, decorative features: quartzite has a remarkable range of uses. Take a look at some examples.
