What to watch out for when cleaning natural stone

Natural stone products stand for durability, even permanence. We want you to keep their original look and good condition for as long as possible, and the right care and protection will help you do that. Here is how to approach cleaning and what to watch out for.
  • Avoid cleaners that are not made for stone
To keep stone looking good and healthy for as long as possible, use cleaners made for this kind of material. High-pH cleaners, bleach and similar products are not suitable at all, as they can discolour the stone or damage it in other ways. There are cleaners made specially for everyday cleaning of natural stone, and you can buy them from us too. Besides a gentle cleaner, you also need a soft microfibre cloth that will not damage the surface.
  • Clean the busiest surfaces regularly
Every home has rooms that are used more than others. These rooms and areas get dirty sooner, so they need cleaning more often. That is the only way to stop dirt from becoming ingrained.
  • Polished stone surfaces need more care
A natural stone surface can be flamed, which is usually used outdoors because it is also slip-resistant, or polished, which is usually used indoors. Polished stone needs more care than flamed stone. A polished natural stone floor that is used every day also needs regular cleaning, as this is the only way to keep the shine this material has. Spilt perfume or alcoholic drinks can also dull the shine. But do not worry: the shine can be restored.
  • Abrasion damage
Sand and dirt can leave scratches, especially on polished natural stone. We therefore recommend placing a doormat at the entrance. It removes larger particles from shoe soles and reduces the risk of damage.   Otherwise, natural stone is fairly easy to maintain.
